The STEAMistic team completed our first-ever initiative of delivering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Activity Boxes to the Ronald McDonald House Charities - Edmonton in June 2022. We created 40 boxes, each containing materials to complete three STEAM activities and an instruction manual that further contained information on careers in STEAM fields. STEAMistic was created in response to barriers to accessible STEAM education opportunities for children and youth across Edmonton and the surrounding area. The goal of STEAMistic is to ignite curiosity, encourage collaboration, and innovation, and foster an interest in the fields of STEAM among young people. Oftentimes, STEAM subjects are taught in rather traditional teaching styles, which may not be suitable for all learners. Thus, our project aims to provide new ways of teaching and learning STEAM subjects – free of cost.
The STEAMistic team had a wonderful experience curating the activity boxes. We hope the families staying at Ronald McDonald House Charities - Edmonton have a joyous experience completing the activities. The STEAMistic team is immensely grateful to the Ronald McDonald House - Edmonton House team for helping us bring this project to fruition.
I'd like to acknowledge that this initial project was completed with a generous grant from #RisingYouth and TakingITGlobal. Special thanks to Amy, who inspired me to undertake this project and provided guidance and support throughout the initial planning process. Most importantly, this project would not have been possible without the hard work of the volunteers; Clara, Bea, Nathan, and Sakina – thank you all for your unwavering dedication and support!
Here’s to many more instances of giving back to the community while sharing our love for STEAM!
All my best,
